A few years ago the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) was introduced to dentistry and thanks to scientific research we are now doing great use of it in oral surgery.
PRP therapy is a simple and predictable technology that uses the body's own regenerative potential to improve and accelerate natural recovery for patients undergoing dental surgeries such as wisdom tooth extraction, dental implants, etc.
Our blood contains all the necessary components for wound healing, but not all components are created equal. Platelets contain a high concentration of fundamental growth factors and are the key players in the process of regeneration.
The goal of PRP therapy is to get these platelets and use them to initiate immediate healing and recovery.
What are the benefits of PRP Therapy?
- Reduced inflammation and pain after a surgical procedure
- Quicker recovery time
- Improved healing as it accelerates the bone & gum formation
- No risk of rejection because it comes from our own blood
Is Platelet rich plasma (PRP) safe?
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous preparation. It is 100% biocompatible because it is prepared from your own blood. This is why the procedure is completely safe and secure and does not present any risk or damage to the patient.
What is the Platelet rich plasma (PRP) procedure like?
This simple procedure starts with a small blood collection from the patient before the intervention. This is carried out by our clinic nurse at the day of your appointment.
Next, we use a specialized centrifuge machine to obtain the platelet rich plasma. The centrifuge spins the sample and separates the platelets from other blood components.
Immediately after finishing your procedure, we will carefully introduce the PRP in high concentration to the surgical area. We will close the surgical area with sutures as we normally do.
The procedure is done within our clinic. Patients do not need to visit other facilities nor need prior preparation in order to do PRP. The entire process is safe and takes around 40 minutes – from blood collection to centrifugation to administration.
This simple technique can be used in any type of surgical intervention and is recommendable for any tooth extractions including wisdom teeth, implants, periodontics, bone graft, etc.
