Orthodontics is becoming an increasingly popular dental procedure and for very good reasons. At Dr. Michael’s Dental Clinic, we have a growing number of patients, both children and adults, who come to us to correct their bites, improve their oral function and to achieve more confident smiles.

We got down with one of our specialist orthodontists Dr. Lina Stavroula Papika to find out what she likes most about her job, what she thinks is the treatment of choice for adults and kids and more.

  1. Out of all the many fields of dentistry, why did you choose Orthodontics?
I chose to specialize in Orthodontics because it combines aesthetics with science, as well as using both hands and mind.

  2. What motivated you to become an orthodontist?
I take pleasure in giving people confident smiles and proper oral function.

  3. What do you think is the biggest change that you’ve seen in your profession?
The biggest change are the availability of more aesthetic treatments like Invisalign, lingual and transparent braces and anchorage solutions (miniscrews) that do not involve surgery.

  4. The most common orthodontic solutions/services in your practice is:
A lot of my patients come to me for Damon braces. They love that the Damon System is more comfortable and that it provides faster results than other options.

  5. Among adults, what’s the most preferred way of correcting bites and straightening teeth? Are traditional metal braces still popular among adults?
Invisalign, ceramic and lingual braces are the treatments of choice for adults. There is no need for metallic braces because there are a more aesthetic approach to correcting your bite and straightening your teeth.

  6. The common misconception/s about orthodontics is/are:
A huge misconception is that orthodontic procedures are painful. This is no longer the case with the newer mechanics. Some people see it merely as an aesthetic treatment. Orthodontic procedures establish good oral function – it is important to bite properly.

  7. When it comes to addressing children’s oral health, what’s the most important thing you like to focus on?
Three things – right eating habits, efficient brushing and regular check-ups with their dentist and hygienist.

  8. Are there any special tricks or tools you use to help give your patients a positive experience in your practice?
I always make it a point to explain the procedure to my patients. I tell them what we’re doing, why we’re doing it and what we expect from the treatment. It’s important to keep the patients informed all the time. This improves compliance and consequently, improved results from any treatment.

  9. For orthodontics to be effective, what do you usually advice your patients?
To get the best results, I advise my patients to be always consistent with their treatment.

  10. Where do you see orthodontics in 10 years?
In 10 years’ time, we will be able to offer shorter treatment time and even more aesthetic approach to orthodontics.

  11. What is your work mantra/motto?
Treat others the way you want to be treated.
