FAQs

Most frequently asked questions

The cost of the teeth whitening treatments depends upon the type of whitening procedures you want to employ.

Teeth whitening or teeth bleaching is a simple and safe process that uses either of two bleaching products — hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. The whitening products break the stains into smaller pieces without damaging your enamel, making the stains less concentrated and your teeth appear whiter and brighter.

If you’re considering teeth whitening, it is prudent to know all the facts about the treatment and what to expect before you opt for it. You should also check with your dentist to ascertain if you’re a candidate for teeth whitening and to determine the best whitening method for your unique situation. Your dentist can discuss your whitening goals, dental history, and budget with you to customise a treatment plan that gives you the beautiful smile you want.

If your teeth and gums are in excellent condition, a home whitening treatment should suffice. The kit is easy to use, convenient and effective.

Professional solutions used by your dentist during an in-office teeth whitening treatment are typically stronger than the home whitening kits, so your teeth may whiten more quickly. They can also make sure that sensitive gums don’t get more irritated.

Yes, it is very important that we see all patients prior to booking the whitening appointment. We also highly recommend that you have a cleaning before whitening. During your initial teeth whitening consultation, our clinicians will evaluate your teeth and gums to see if you will benefit from the treatment. They will review your concerns, expectations and lifestyle to determine the best whitening option that will work best for you. It’s also important to check for decay or any major sensitivities before getting your teeth whitened. Your hygienist will also note existing dental works like crowns, fillings and veneers which will not respond to the whitening procedure.

The amount of time it takes to whiten your teeth at home versus at the dentist is significant. At the dentist’s office, you may spend one to two hours but leave with teeth 8 shades whiter, whereas at home you will have to spend one to two hours per day over several days or weeks for your teeth to become 3-6 shades whiter.
Since in-clinic whitening agents can penetrate deeper below the surface of the tooth and are stronger due to the concentration of the solution, your teeth will stay whiter longer compared to at-home teeth whitening methods.

Just about anyone is a candidate for teeth whitening. At Dr. Michael’s Dental Clinic, our dentists and hygienists will have to assess your teeth and overall oral health to determine if you are fit to do the procedure.

The entire in-office teeth whitening treatment can take up to 2 hours. We will take impressions of your teeth for custom-fitted home trays and do necessary preparations for gum protection, followed by the application of the whitening gel. A special light/lamp may or may not be used. Most of our patients listen to music or watch TV while they’re getting their teeth whitened, others even fall asleep throughout their treatment.

Teeth whitening is safe for healthy teeth and it does not damage the enamel. The in-office whitening gel’s active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide which breaks down into oxygen that removes the stain and makes your teeth whiter while leaving your tooth structure unchanged.

Results can last at varying lengths depending on your genes, lifestyle and oral hygiene, but in general, they can last for up to a year. Top-up treatments every three to six months (or as prescribed by your clinician) as this will help maintain a beautiful sheen, especially if you smoke or drink coffee or tea.

A naturally white smile is a wonderful asset anyone can have. Ideally, the color of your teeth should match the whites of your eyes.

Tooth sensitivity is a common side effect of teeth whitening treatments. During the treatment, you may experience some discomfort or sensitivity in your teeth and gums due to the whitening agents penetrating the enamel. This sensitivity usually subsides within a few days to a week after the treatment, and can be managed with toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth or other options recommended by your dentist.

If you are considering a tooth whitening procedure or preparing for your appointment, you may be wondering if a dental cleaning is needed before the treatment. Cleaning your teeth ahead of a whitening treatment has many benefits and is recommended by dentists and hygienists as it helps to augment the results of the procedure and maximize the benefits.

Professional teeth cleaning sessions before the whitening helps to remove food debris lodged around the teeth and crevices of the oral cavity, which may block the whitening agent from reaching everywhere. Cleaning will ensure your teeth are uniformly whitened and every surface of the teeth is covered.

Tooth cleaning before whitening also helps to remove tartar from the teeth to make the whitening more effective.

Caring for newly whitened teeth is easy! Maintain proper oral hygiene – brush your teeth twice a day and floss once daily using a fluoride toothpaste. Get your teeth cleaned every 6 months or as recommended by your dentist or hygienist. To maintain the white color of your teeth, avoid acidic and dark-colored foods and beverages like tea, coffee, red wine, sports drinks, carbonated drinks and sauces like tomato, soy and curry.

According to experts, cosmetic treatments that are not pressing, such as teeth whitening, should be postponed until after delivery. The American Dental Association (ADA) agrees, stating that due to the potential safety concerns regarding bleaching materials, pregnant women should delay any teeth whitening procedures. If you need detailed information on doing dental procedures while pregnant or breastfeeding, read our blog.

The home whitening kit, along with your custom-fitted tray, will be supplied to you to support the in-office whitening. You may be required to wear the tray for an hour each day for a minimum of three days after your appointment to complement your whitening treatment. Remember to brush and floss your teeth before you wear your whitening tray. You would need to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking while wearing the trays and continue to do the same for two hours after the application.
