It might be the scent of fresh air or the familiar rhythm of her horse’s steps, but as a young child, Dulene would go horseback riding almost every day as she got home from school. Growing up on a farm outside Stellenbosch, her childhood days were filled with days like these, her dog would play and chase after her and she would bask in the beautiful South African weather.
Not a day goes by that Dulene doesn’t melt into a good read. Waiting for a cab, the hairdresser or even simply for water to boil, it’s just another perfect excuse for her to sneak back into her books. It doesn’t really matter if she has to read via e-books, audio books or soft bounds, reading is one of her greatest passions in life.
The other passion, Oral Health for Life! Dulene knew in her heart that she would pursue something related to the medical field. She has been drawn to helping sick or frail people and animals even when she was younger. She was ready to attend to fractures and nurse scraped and bleeding wounds. Now, being a hygienist for over 20 years, she still experiences the same joy and passion for her profession as the very first day she set off to campus to follow her life’s dream.
Arriving in 2008 after her husband accepted a job offer to work in the UAE, she fell in love with the beautiful desert she now calls her home. Not only because it gave her that precious freedom of having wide open spaces and magnificent scenery just like her home country, but also for the sense of safety it gives her, the beautiful dive-sites and it’s many wonderful camping destinations.
She beats stress with just being with her family and friends, around a roaring fire and having a braai (BBQ). Ideal weekends are spent away from her home. Snorkeling and scuba diving are regular family affairs (that’s when she’s not reading). Dulene also loves to travel. She’s been to Thailand twice and they’re already planning a third trip. She’d love to go to Rome or perhaps France, just to indulge on her romantic side.
At work she’s always asked about the best toothpaste to use. Her answer is always the same, with a few exceptions, “It’s not just the toothpaste that cleans the teeth, but the mechanical action we use, and more importantly, the time and technique used to clean our teeth. Use whatever you like or can afford, but use the right technique.”
